More Than Data: The Story Behind Scouting Dumornay and the Human Side of Recruitment

Years ago, I had the honor of being part of the coaching staff that scouted and recruited a young, fearless talent to the Haiti Women’s National Team—Melchie Dumornay. From the very first moment we met, something clicked. There was an energy about her, a quiet fire that told me this player was different. We got close quickly, and as I began to understand who she was both on and off the field, it became clear that she wasn’t just promising—she was destined to do something special.

Watching Dumornay evolve into the star she is today, breaking records and shocking the women’s football world with her talent, fills me with pride. But it also reminds me of why I fell in love with this part of the game: the opportunity to connect with players, to see their potential before the world does, and to commit to being the kind of coach and mentor they deserve.

Back then in Haiti, I didn’t have fancy tools or advanced scouting platforms. My scouting “software” was time—time spent observing, talking, listening, and learning about the athlete as a whole person. That experience shaped my philosophy and it still drives how I scout today.
Of course, the game has changed. The landscape of recruitment and scouting has grown tremendously. Today, clubs and scouts rely heavily on data, video analysis, and performance tracking software to uncover new talent. And rightly so—these tools are valuable. I use them too. They help us identify, compare, and project players in ways we couldn’t before.
But even as the technology evolves, I hold tight to something that hasn’t changed: the human connection.
What motivates a player? What challenges have they overcome? What do they dream about? These questions don’t show up in a spreadsheet, but they matter—especially when we’re talking about developing young athletes with long careers ahead. I still take the time to get to know each athlete personally. I want to understand what they love, where they come from, and what makes them tick. Because talent alone isn’t the whole story—character, resilience, and connection are just as vital.

This holistic approach to scouting and coaching isn’t old-fashioned—it’s essential. Yes, let’s use the tools. Let’s get faster, smarter, more efficient. But let’s also stay human. Because at the end of the day, these young athletes who are shaping the future of the game are not just stats or highlights—they’re people.
And if we want to help them rise, we have to meet them where they are, support them as whole individuals, and never lose sight of the heart behind the game.
